Most gold coin dealers have thought about buying professionally graded coins at one time or another, but the question is why? These coins may also be referred to as certified or slabbed, they are sometimes called slabbed because of the plastic slab certified coins are generally found in. A subject like this is very divisive, since each side of the coin has its own strong defenders. In the following piece, we shall focus on the advantages of graded coins, and in particular PCGS graded coins. Although there are many other grading services available, the Professional Coin Grading Service has been judged as being the most reliable in grade and capability. 400 years after Columbus made landfall in the New World, the World's Columbian Exposition became the most defining moment in the United States for years to come. May 1, 1893 marked the opening of this momentous day in history. The Exposition spanned more than 600 acres of beautiful Jackson Park in Chicago that were marked by more than 200 classically designed buildings, bridges and lagoons. The sheer magnitude of the Exposition far surpassed all other World's Fairs further proving the theory of American Exceptionalism. Furthermore, the Fair showed that Chicago had risen from beneath the ashes of the Great Chicago Fire, which in 1871 destroyed 4 square miles of Chicago and took hundreds of lives. The...

The City announced today that nearly one third of the cities neighborhoods are EMPTY, that is roughly 45 square miles! It is a trend that I think will continue in other cities as well... In Florida, entire subdivisions sit empty, slowly depreciating and disintegrating due to lack of maintenance. Houses require maintenance, expensive maintenance! Coin collectors, old and new, have constantly wondered whether the coin or coins they've in their possession are really worth a lot more than the face worth these days - or within the foreseeable future. Although that a coin which has little or no worth monetarily is not necessarily a single would not maintain or make part of one’s coin collection. The following are basic factors which could influence a coin’s worth. How rare or common is it? Usually, the idea that everybody understands and follows is this: the rarer a coin the higher the coin’s really worth. This rule is true in some instances and – fortunately or regrettably – false on the others. There was a situation where a Chinese...

Now that a new home business has opened that sells gold and silver collectible coins, it would be wise to know what the difference is between a collectible and a bullion coin. But let's keep it very simple and easy to follow. Is there really a difference in gold or silver? No, the gold or silver content is the same in both a bullion coin and a collector coin. However, the market values are usually vastly different. This is due to the condition and/or rarity of the coin. Common sense bears this out. You can easily have two cars, two computers, two comic books or two baseball cards that are identical in their category but be in a different condition. Each has it own value depending on condition. The...

Coins are very vital collectibles and you need to preserve the old and vintage coins with perfection. Basically, the coin collection is a remarkably excellent hobby and people are very happy to collect the different types of coins which are made of pure metals like gold, silver, bronze and platinum. Rare coins are mainly made of gold and platinum. However the usage of the silver coins was extensive in the past and in modern times the value of the antique silver bullion coins is much higher. To be frank, there are many guys who have dearth of practical knowledge how to preserve the good coins to avoid the encrustation rust. If you are unable to maintain the regularity in the upkeep of the coins, the...

Silver is currently being referred to as the new Gold. Why? Because when gold prices increase, such as they have recently, investors seek a lesser expensive alternative. That's why silver is called poor-man's gold. Coin and bar sales have been so robust -- the U.S. Mint now is rationing American Eagle coins -- that dealers say they can't meet small-investor demand. Financial experts are of the opinion that the present economic problems the world is facing are going to get worse. Those who study financial trends are urging the public to convert their paper money into tangible assets. The feeling is that sooner or later, physical assets trump paper. Experts feel that Silver is once again poised to...

To collect coins is not what most people think of as a heart stopping, pulse racing, knuckle biting way to wring out the tensions of the workday. This is a hobby of quiet contemplation. Right? OK, so NASCAR it is not. But still, for such a calm activity, there do seem to be more than a few coin collectors, especially in the US. More than you would think, if all these passionately involved individuals are just, uh, filling up holes in an album. What is going on here? What are all these people thinking about, and why do they so enjoy what this hobby seems to be giving them? What is the connection? Ask any coin collector about his interest in the hobby and you will see certain patterns of connection...

These coins have marked events or may signify the work of  royalty during that period. There are those collectors that prefer the modern series that are very distinct as well. One modern collection is that of the quarter dollars that represent the 50 states of the US. Minting and circulation started in 1999 and will continue until 2008. These are specially made editions available for collectors. Many collectible coins are made of copper and a collector may encounter problems in maintaining their features and appearance. The best time to mould a child (kid) is when he/she is still young. By getting the curious minds involved in something educational, there is a very good chance that they will become responsible adults. Some parents can start by teaching how to cook or baking at a young age. If the child enjoys and does well with it, then perhaps in the future, this person could become a chef. Giving a child a hobby can also teach that child how to stay focused or to pay particular attention to a certain subject. A good example of this is starting a coin collection. For most adults coins are just petty cash. They are used to buy a newspaper or used to pay for a ride on the subway etc. For...

There are not big expenses associated with this collection hobby, as in most cases, the most expensive item could be the coin itself. Only coin aficionados that look for something really rare and unique, such as vintage bank notes, might need to spend more money, but for most people a coin collection requires little money indeed. When collecting coins, there are a few supplies you need to have, because these items require preservation and attention. In any case, coins are a kind of investment and need to be taken care of...

Key Coin: A coin that is among the toughest and Most Expensive to obtain within a series. In the Lincoln Cent series, for example, the 1909-S VDB would be considered the key, as would the 1914-D and often the 1922-Plain. A coin somewhat lesser in stature but still among the tougher in a series to collect is called a semi-key; the 1909-S and 1931-S fulfill this role within the Lincoln Cent series for many collectors. Both key coins and semi-key coins are in great demand due primarily to the limited supply of coins available. Since this increases the demand for such coins, the results are higher prices for all such coins. Coins with higher grades are even more difficult to acquire. The grade of a coin...

Coin collecting is known as the hobby of kings. It's not clear exactly how this came to be, but here's my take on it. The average person in those days needed every coin they had. Those who were able to set aside their money as playthings were royalty and they would use their collections to show off to others how wealthy they were. Thus poorer people weren...

Coins that are used for daily utilization are only struck once in the die casting machine whereas proof coins are struck twice or sometimes more to create a highly comprehensive mirrored exterior on the coin occasionally referred to as a cameo. A worthless silver coin for collecting purposes is any circulated silver coin that is only in fair condition and has value to collectors beyond the value of the silver bullion it contains. This is an unofficial term used in the United States and Canada. Junk silver is not scrap silver. These coins can still be spent in the US and Canadian markets for the value stamped on the coin. However, coin collectors call them "junk" because they have little numismatic, or trading, value. The Mercury and Roosevelt dimes, the Washington quarters, and the Franklin and Kennedy half dollars are the most popular US coins collected for junk silver. These coins, minted before 1964, contain 90% silver composition, with...
